I'm Lani. I live in Austin, Texas (jealous?). I am the New Media Director of Single Pointe Realty (and AgentGenius.com). I keep this blog as my personal take on the market, the business of Real Estate, and the agents that make up the profession from all over the nation. Because I am not a licensed agent- I write commentary from the unique perspective of part consumer, part insider. Oh, and I have a ridiculous affinity for cheese.

We're a unique real estate company that doesn't operate as a traditional brokerage. We bring new technology, modern buying & selling strategies to our clients- it's been my job to create a home buying & selling experience that is fun, fresh, & exciting for today's Austin real estate consumer.

Someone Hates Southerners

redneck, y’allIn the interest of being fair and balanced, I wanted to share with you a comment you may  not have read that was written last night in regards to a past article titled “Tips You *Must* Know When Dealing With A Southerner” about interacting with us Southerners.  Bart Wheeler’s position:

Southerners being so “honest” and “friendly” is just plain not true. My experience is they’re conniving, evil, backstabbing and ready to do anything it takes to get ahead. I have a boss, a true “flower of the south” from some hillbillie swamp in Florida and she’ll come to me acting all kindsa friendly, playful and “nice” just to get some information out of me she will later use to ridicule me and put me down with in front of our superiors. Or she’ll snitch on me for the dumbest little infractions. How is that “friendly”, “generous” or “honest”?! And all your bullcrap ideals of “real men” and chivalry only show how sad and pathetic “y’all” are. And your racism and prejudice only show how insecure you are. Just as a reminder, YOU LOST THE WAR. What? “The south shall rise again?” Go ahead, losers. I frikkin’ dare you.

Yikes!!!  I guess not all Southerners give us a good name!  I assure you Bart, your co-worker is a horse of a different breed.  On behalf of the South, I’m sorry you’ve had that experience, buddy!  Come to Austin- dinner’s on me (consider it the South’s repayment for your suffering).

This guy hasn’t met the true southern gents and belles…Why do we always hear about a war that was before all of our time? May he find some peace and visit Texas soon! His mind will change quickly!

I apologize. I was writing this late at night and may have made an unfair overgeneralization. I am somewhat at a loss at how to relate to this one person I work with and I vented my anger here. But, to be fair, I have met Southerners I respected and liked (North Carolina belongs, right?). I really feel like a class “a” you-know-what right now.

Austin has always intrigued me… Isn’t it a little Bohemian compared to the rest of the South?

Anyway, my remarks were out of place. Thank you for responding. That reminds me the internet is not some black hole you can throw your garbage into.

Hmmm, Austin… I am getting tired of winters in Colorado :)

It’s always NOT a good idea to generalize about any place or people. I’ve met enough nice southerners and plenty of rude ones. I’ve been good northerners and plenty of not so good ones.

Once you make a blanket statement about a people group I can almost assure you you’ll meet someone who won’t fit that profile and you better be humble enough to accept it.

  4. Jay Thompson Says:

Huh. Sounds like she’s just a bitch. There are bitches in the north, south, east and west.

  5. lani Says:

Bart, no worries- guess what? Jay’s point is the best… people can suck no matter where they are from.

I assure you that your comment didn’t hurt me or offend me- it was too funny NOT to publicize!!! See, that’s true Southern charm- forgive and forget; we take it easy!

(Yes, Austin is Bohemian-ish. Very diverse, mostly people from not-Austin.)

Last note- don’t worry, Texans don’t realize we’re Southerners… we’re simply “Texans”- a class of our own! Good luck with your crappy coworker- just tell her she sucks at being Southern (if she’s a true Southerner, that will offend her- great litmus test). OR, you can point her here so she can read your comments directly :)

Glad I came back to read Bart’s apology! Now Bart, if you are planning a Texas trip, I think Houston would be a well-deserved visit! Austin isn’t really Texas! They are implants that really don’t represent Texas. They have bumper stickers that read, “Keep Austin Weird,” they are just that! No offense to my beautiful and talented Texas friend Lani who lives there. Well, I did too during my college years, however, Houston is a great place for you to visit. It may not be as pretty as Austin, but we do our share of providing the world with our oil/gas products. Houston has the most diverse community, beautiful skyline, close to the water for your yachting experience. We have the world renown medical center, world renown chefs and restaurants. We are represented in all the sporting venues and you can even use our freeways as the Autobahn! Austin is considered the Music Capital of the World with great live music, and Houston is considered just CLASS! So tell your co-worker to kiss your ass and get your butt to Texas, you will be glad you did! Oh, Lani is right…we Texans never think we are from the South — WE ARE JUST SIMPLY FROM TEXAS!

you will get more honesty in NYC. It will be brutal and you might not like it, but honest.

  8. Eric W. Gage Says:

FYI– My comments was a friendly joke to my Austin friends! And Lani is the best!!!

  9. rob Says:

I was having fun also, pointing out that the not so subtle differencs between the N and S.

Not intended as a disrespect either way, I live in the Mountain west. More in response to the b_ _ _ _ in Florida.

A better question is do you think people who say smooth as a baby’s butt have ever changed a diaper? I mean seriously, why do we spend so much time dreaming of being younger or going back in time, or relating to childhood when we really should embrace the “now”. Looking backwards is so “life in reverse.”[…]
