I'm Lani. I live in Austin, Texas (jealous?). I am the New Media Director of Single Pointe Realty (and AgentGenius.com). I keep this blog as my personal take on the market, the business of Real Estate, and the agents that make up the profession from all over the nation. Because I am not a licensed agent- I write commentary from the unique perspective of part consumer, part insider. Oh, and I have a ridiculous affinity for cheese.

singlepointerealty.com relocation, sales, leasing, austin real estate and homes

We're a unique real estate company that doesn't operate as a traditional brokerage. We bring new technology, modern buying & selling strategies to our clients- it's been my job to create a home buying & selling experience that is fun, fresh, & exciting for today's Austin real estate consumer.

My Blog Sucks Sometimes

Realtor Wives is NOW RE RevealedOkay, so the time has come.  Here’s what I like and hate about my new Word Press blog (and theme).  In the comments, please submit your own love/hate comments about RERevealed.

I LOVE GREEN:
*the Web 2.0 rounded edges
*our original blogroll
*great dashboard (can’t compete with the ol’ Blogger)
*ability to morph the template as I learn php
*category bar minimizes/maximizes with window
*our original “home” button on top right
*green.  I like green.  And I love the date feature.

WHY IT AIN’T EASY BEING GREEN:
*I haven’t figured out how fix archiving (you can only read 3-4 back, nothing more)
*the article width is a little skinny for my taste
*changing URLs AND sites in one fell swoop lowers readership
*most people’s blogroll still reflects my old site (Jeff, you know who you are)
*I haven’t figured out how to install an RSS button yet- boo.

So, what are your loves/hates with the RE Revealed site?  Any tips on how to fix this junk?   Some time back, RSSP and I went back and forth on aggressively critiquing blogs when unsolicited; today, I SOLICIT (but in a legal way)- bark all you guys want, it’s time for some late spring cleaning!

    1. I hate that my blogroll is busted for not having changed to your new digs. :)

    2. You may be right about the article width.

    3. It might be my eyes, but the complaints I had on my old set-up was “…a little difficult to read.” Your new design is a tad tough for me.

    4. Like the name and the frog.

    5. Much of real estate is black and white. Not sure of your tag line.

    6. Though my original design (darth BawldGuy) was my personal preference, I yielded to my web design guy when he showed me his idea for the change.

    7. The tech problems you list are fixed in 100 seconds with my guy. Hire some help.

I like the change Lani - it’s overall, an obvious improvement. Your ideas were pretty cool.

Home (main page) button after submitting a comment is hard to find. Navigation is difficult on this site.

Article width is small. The blog only extends like half the width of my monitor. Too much unused space.

Like the lizard as it is sort of like your own brand but at the same time it reminds me too much of the Budweiser lizards.

Not a very professional layout. More child’s play.

Comment box is bigger than the article box.

Seriously needs to clean up categories and tags.

I think if you would remove the page login, sponsors and meta section over one and keep the recent readers and buttons where they are it would make things a lot better looking and take care of some of the unused space.

Maybe also add a poll or survey to make use of wasted space. My blog has a lot of wasted space too so..

I told you I hate green but you know the story behind that one so..

What do I like… I like your writing. It’s unique and original. It’s a different prospective to real estate.

Your use of graphics and images are a lot better here than they are on my blog. You pick some good pictures out on both blogs and your use of pictures often grabs our attention.

No real voice here yet. Its a new site and it does not appear to be a real estate site yet even through we all know it is. Basically there is no niche but heck neither is my blog!

Okay, I’ll shut up now. :-)

There is not enough contrast between the white text and this light green for those of us with old eyes. It’s hard to read on a computer monitor.

I may be guilty of lost link love - will check it out and correct.

Ah, Lani, you knew I’d show up eventually, didn’t you? First I want to tell you that I personally love the new site. It’s fantastic. But here are my suggestions, in a non-WTF way:
    - I suggest using a white background and black text in your posts, because that is the easiest to read. When you stare at a bright color too long, you get a headache and see spots everywhere. Perhaps you could even do a very light green background with black text, that way you keep your color scheme.
    - There is too much wasted space. I would make the header and the posts box much wider. I’m on a widescreen monitor, so I’m sure I’m seeing even more empty space than some, but there’s still too much of it.
    - I would also suggest centering the posts box. It shows up alllll the way to the left on my screen.
    - Here’s what I love: the date stamp, the round edges, the great color scheme, the lizard, the new name. Your site feels funky and fresh and that’s important. You did a good job, just remember that most new sites need tweaks at first.

  8. Erin Fogarty Says:

I did forget a few things, sorry! You should have social bookmarking like Digg and Reddit, and you need an RSS subscription box. I would also recommend a Search box so readers can search for specific articles, and perhaps a Captcha for your comments (though that’s personal preference, really). I am also a little confused about your About page, as it seems to be linked to in a post, but I can’t find a link to it from the Home page…? Am I just missing it?

Good luck, Lani, I’m sure this blog will be a success!

That GEICO frog is freaking me out.

  10. Michael Price Says:

I’ve actually bailed on the blog a few times because it is so hard to read. In some cases I copy the text and paste it into my Mac’s TextEdit app so I can read it easier.

A better question is do you think people who say smooth as a baby’s butt have ever changed a diaper? I mean seriously, why do we spend so much time dreaming of being younger or going back in time, or relating to childhood when we really should embrace the “now”. Looking backwards is so “life in reverse.”[…]
