Dumb It Down
For those of you who don’t own Lupe Fiasco’s most recent CD, please go buy it now, listen to it from beginning to end and watch how it changes your life. I’m being serious. One of my favorite songs is crucial in this blogiverse we are all so dedicated to. It is tempting to write about what’s popular and it’s easier to regurgitate others’ materials, but take a tip from Lupe Fiasco… refuse to dumb it down!
Some lyrics are definitely NSFW (not safe for work OR children under 18):
My favorite quotes:
- “They’re starting to think that smart is cool, Lupe!”
- “Robots and skateboards? GQ Man of the Year award?”
- “I flatly refuse.”
- Oh, and don’t forget the Star Trek references!

You know I’m a big Lupe fan, and this is one of my favorite tracks on the album.
I think that, “dumb it down,” is a phrase that a lot of people misuse when it comes to talking about technology. The key is not to dumb it down, but to distill to the essential, to simplify. If you listen to much of Lupe’s music, you notice that he never dumbs it down, but he does use very simple beats and hooks. He doesn’t let the medium get in the way of the message, no matter how complex that message might be.

Now…I shall…proceed…and continue….to rock the mike.
Thanks for this. I am glad to have hope in humanity again.

Daniel, we had our 17 year old listen to the CD from beginning to end and it changed him- I’m not kidding! He noted meanings of songs and realized that music can be a tool for good (yes, all teens wanna be rappers).
Chris, so happy Lupe could give you hope!
